"Glass," says Monica Backstom, "talks about light, about tension and uncertainty, about life itself. The spectrum is infinite. Glass is a plastic medium with a wonderful range of expression." Monica explores that infinite spectrum with a body of work that has helped define Kosta Boda as a source of creativity in the art of glassmaking and secure her name as design innovator.
Drawing on her formal training as a silversmith, Monica took on the technical challenges of encapsulating metals within molten glass, playfully experimenting with the possibilities of combined materials, creating a new class of product for Kosta Boda.
Monica shares with all artists of Kosta Boda a nearly mystic love of the natural world, a source of inspriation and sustenance for her designs. Organic, "growing" forms are signatures of her work, and recently she has begun to explore cosmic themes.
