Martti Rytkonen

When he came to Orrefors on a scholarship in 1994, Finland-born Martti Rytkonen began creating a body of work that projected a hip, modern sensibility while evoking the narrative works of Edward Hald and other masters who shaped the Orrefors style of the early 20th century. Martti is a storyteller who also loves pure form and color. His works are executed in classic Orrefors-Kosta Boda techniques, even as he, like all Kosta Boda artists, constantly experiments with design and process. Sophisticated and high-concept, yet as charming as folk art, Martti's works incorporate stylized images from nature, history, myth, urban life, graffiti, TV, movies, comics, the art of children - and his own playful imagination. Martti's formal training began in the design program of the Kyrkeruds Folkhogskola in Finland, continued at Medborgarskolans Art School in Stockholm and the Swedish National College of Arts, Craft and Design, where he was a scholarship student focusing on ceramics and glass design. Martti's work is in many private and public collections, including the National Museum of Fine Arts, Stockholm; Rhosska Museum of Applied Arts and the Swedish Glass Museum.

About Kosta Boda

With characteristic craftsmanship and good design, and an ongoing commitment to avant-garde expression, Kosta Boda has become one of the leading glasshouses in the world.

The company's three glassworks in the villages of Kosta, Boda and Åfors each have exciting individual stories of their own, yet stand together under the common brand name Kosta Boda.

Ten designers are currently on retainer at Kosta Boda. They work with both utilitarian and art glass. The designers are Monica Backström, Olle Brozén, Anna Ehrner, Kjell Engman, Anne Nilsson, Ulrica Hydman-Vallien, Gunnel Sahlin, Bertil Vallien, Ann Wåhlström and Göran Wärff.

Glass results from a great many meetings between people - artists, craftspeople and lovers of glass. The artists of Kosta Boda have a decisive role to play in all the creative stages of the process.

The cooperation between the designers and the skilled craftspeople is very close; indeed, it is essential if the designers are to transfer their intentions to the glass.
