Previously, brandy
snifters and scotch nosing glasses were
used to taste bourbon, as the optimal
glass for this spirit had never been
developed.
Under the direction of
George Riedel, three intense workshops
were conducted comprised of the world's
leading bourbon authorities to uncover the
ultimate glass shape and style for tasting
bourbon.
"A glass's shape and
style have a profound effect on how the
human palate will perceive the flavours of
a fine spirit or wine," says George
Riedel. "Bourbon was in need of a glass
that would capture the spirit's complex
characteristics and create the paramount
tasting experience for bourbon
connoisseurs and enthusiasts."
At the first workshop
George Riedel and a panel of experts
taste-tested five different bourbons in 14
glass shapes he had pre-selected. The experts
evaluated each bourbon within the flight and
ranked the glasses in order of preference.
The panel selected three varying glass shapes
as their favourites, of which only one was
