- For
the Millennium New Year, Waterford
Crystal designed a crystal ball that
dropped on New York's Times Square
at midnight on December 31st,
1999.
For
this event, watched by half a
billion people, Waterford Crystal
designed an impressive piece. The
ball is 6 feet in diameter, 800
lbs., made out of 180 panels of
Waterford crystal. It was the first
time that the ball was completely
transparent.
The
2000 ball was made by over 100
Waterford Master Craftsmen, and its
design featured theme of "Star of
Hope".
For
New Year 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 as
well as for 2005 Waterford has been
replacing several of the panels with
the new ones featuring "Hope For
Abundance" (2001) , "Hope for Healing"
(2002), "Hope for Courage" (2003), and
the "Hope for Unity (2004) themes. The
theme for 2005 is "Hope for Wisdom".
Each subsequent year the ball will be
used, a new theme will be featured.
When the ball finally retires it will
be comprised of many different panels
featuring good wishes for
humanity.
