The black jasper vase is one of the more exotic fruits of the great wave of neo classically styled decorative ornaments that flowed in a seemingly unending stream from the Wedgwood factory in the heyday of the 18th century “vase frenzy”.
It is easy to imagine that this design was derived from an engraving of a classical incense burner from amongst the illustrations of Montfaucon in his ‘L’Antiquité expliquée et representée en figures’, a well used part of Josiah’s library.
