The plaque is inspired by a framed cameo collection that can be found in the Wedgwood Museum Trust. The term ‘Cameo’ originated in classical antiquity when it related to gems carved in low relief, particularly naturally laminated objects where the carving would reveal a contrasting background.
Collecting antique gems was a passion for many in the 18th century and Josiah Wedgwood successfully met this trend by creating replicas of antique originals in Jasper.
