Herculaneum an ancient city of Cammpania in the shadow of Vesuvius. It was captured by the Roman s in 88BC and subsequently suffered the ill effects of Mt. Vesuvius and was buried under ash. It was discovered in 1738.

In 1770, Lord Lansdowne granted Wedgwood permission to copy some of the bas-reliefs by using the actual casts found in Herculaneum.

This wall plaque is reproduced in Black Basalt with hand applied gold lining and is mounted on sage green velvet background.
