When Josiah Wedgwood I introduced his world famous Jasper in the mid 1770’s, initially only cameos and small items could be produced. Josiah had encountered endless problems in developing this fine grained stoneware body, having to carry out thousands of trials before he was satisfied. Eventually all the firing difficulties were overcome and the aristocracy flocked to buy the large, classically inspired vases exhibited in Wedgwood’s London Showrooms.
After Josiah’s death, the popularity of Jasper declined, but the neo-classical revival of the high-Victorian era increased demand for high-quality decorative objects. This superb dipped vase is directly inspired by an original dating from that time.
