The Greeks knew Mercury as Hermes, god of commerce, game and good fortune. In Greek and Roman mythology, he wore the winged sandals or talaria as well as a winged hat or petasos, as seen in the bust.
As a messenger of the gods, Mercury had many responsibilities. One of the more onerous was when he was asked to guide the three goddesses, Venus, Juno and Minerva to their judgement by Paris. The bust is a reproduction of the original modelled by John Flaxman Jnr in 1781.
