The plaque is a faithful copy of the relief featured on a Pentelic marble sarcophagus that was in the Capitoline Museum in 1790.
The Nereids were the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris. As well as coming to the aid of sailors, they were often depicted accompanying Poseidon, god of the sea, and riding an assortment of sea creatures. One of the most prominent amongst the Nereids was Thetis, mother of the great hero Achilles.
