The original cameo-glass Portland also known as Barberini Vase is thought to date to the reign of the Emperor Caesar (27BC-14 AD) and is currently in the Collection of the British Museum, London.
Josiah Wedgwood I, founder of the Wedgwood Company in 1759, produced his first good copy in Jasper of this celebrated vase in October 1789. These famed First Edition Portland Vases in white on black Jasper are in collections of note, worldwide. Today, Wedgwood continues the production of the ‘icon’ piece in limited editions to celebrate or commemorate special events.
