The Belleek Prince of Wales ice pail, like the one seen here, was originally designed in 1880 for presentation to the Prince of Wales (Edward VII). It was made sometime in the 1930s and was intended to be presented at the coronation of Edward VIII in 1937.However, Edward abdicated in December of 1936 and the coronation never took place. The original ice pail is on display at the Vernon Museum in British Columbia. It is one of the finest examples of fine Belleek Parian. This intricate piece features a putto astride a dolphin surrounded with three hippocampi over waves on the lid, the cylindrical body is decorated with putti in a nautical setting, raised on a tripartite mermaid form stem over the circular foot. The Belleek Prince of Wales ice pail stands almost 20 inches tall, and is made of unglazed Parian china. Made in Ireland.
