This depiction of the Roman goddess of love was inspired by a model originally made at the Wedgwood (Etruria) factory in the 1840s. The Roman goddess Venus was principally associated with love, beauty and fertility - and was known by the Greeks as Aphrodite. Venus was a popular subject, often appearing in painting and sculpture during the renaissance period in Europe, and was usually depicted unclothed as she was considered to be the embodiment of female beauty. The Queensware Collection uses the same unique cream-colored earthenware that Josiah Wedgwood developed in 1765. The tableware created with this color was so beautiful that Englands Queen Charlotte that she gave permission for this gracious innovation to be dubbed Queens Ware and it became, without question, Josiahs greatest contribution to the British pottery industry. Wedgwood china has graced the homes and palaces of the world's most discerning customers for more than 250 years. With the highest quality controls in the industry and an emphasis on leading edge design, Wedgwood Prestige fine bone china tableware makes a statement of the company's commitment to fine dining, inspired living and timeless luxury.
